On this page, you will find more information on free yoga exercises online and free yoga lessons.

Yoga as a system of physical exercise has been in existence since very ancient times. Bending, stretching and breathing can improve your health dramatically and yoga is a prefect way to do just that. According to ancient people who teach (sages), there are eight stages of yoga, namely :

1. Yama (Social Discipline)
2. Niyama (Individual Discipline)
3. Asana (Postures)
4. Pranayama (Breath Control)
5. Pratyahara (Mental Discipline)
6. Dharana (Concentration)
7. Dhyana (Meditation) and
8. Samadhi (Self-realization)

You can see that yoga is encompassing in every aspect, and not simply meditation and yoga poses.

You can start by understanding the day-to-day guide (Stage 1 and 2).

These are the essentials of the practice of Yoga. But, when you actually begin to practise it, you will find it is not as easy. So, you have to be very honest in your pursuit.

A daily routine starts with having a fixed procedure of practice every day, in three prongs :

(a) JAPA - chanting some mantra over and over to maintain the same consciousness (this is often useful when meditation is difficult). A good yoga teacher can provide guidance in this.

(b) STUDY - reading scriptures or texts on yoga. Yoga is not a religion, and again you should get the guidance of a good yoga teacher.

(c) MEDITATION - should be performed at a fixed time and in a fixed place every day. Face the same direction daily (either the East or the North) and sit in the same Asana (i.e. posture) every day.

Apart from the daily routines, you need to have an annual resolve, much like the New Year's resolution. Vow to give up bad habits, undesirable conduct like harming others, telling lies etc.

Maintain a Spiritual Diary. When you go to bed every night you should review what you have done since morning. This diary may consist of questions you may ask yourself, of how you have conducted yourself, and treatment of others.
